Sharon Shapiro Bishop - September 2nd, 2024
My first love... so many fun, crazy memories! Bruce Springsteen concerts, Stray Cats, Prince! VW Bug, ski trips, dances... break ups lol! He worked at Amgen on Epogen.... life changing drug for dialysis patients. My heart broke when I found out he passed away. ????????
Dara Gelbman Goldsmith - August 21st, 2024
I remember swimming in the summer with Victor and skating at Skateen. He lived next door to Donna Giordan. He always went out of his way to be nice to us.
Lisa Wilkenfeld Kirk - August 20th, 2024
My heart is so sad to see that Vic has passed . Vic was one of the kindest guys I knew in high school. I was so lucky to get to know him when I was a statistician for the JV baseball team. He was always a gentleman. He always spoke so highly of his Mom and I’m sure their close relationship was one of the reasons he was such a great guy. ????

Jon Epstein (Colella)

Graduation year: 1984
Jim Hart - March 1st, 2024
Jon lived right behind our neighborhood in the new neighborhood where we used to have kite wars. When he first moved to Westlake, he and I were very close friends. Again, we drifted apart in the murk of high school where I really thought my identity was somehow tied to those I hung with. Later in life, Jon and I became reconnected and I really enjoyed our stories and memories, especially the time we conned him into eating a fly off the windowsill at my mom's house. HE was a NUT and so much fun. I miss Jon....

Charles Andrews (English Professor)

Birth Date: 1941-07-17
Graduation year: 84
Deceased Date: 2022-05-24
Obituary:
Easton, MD, formerly of Camarillo - Charles H Andrews III passed away peacefully May 24, 2022, in Easton, Maryland at the age of 81, surrounded at home by friends and family. Born on July 17th in Flint, Michigan, he is survived by his wife of 54 years, Susan, and their two sons Charlie (Pam with Tucker, Avery, Kate) of Easton and Robbie (Lindsay) of Corvallis, Oregon. Chuck was a lifetime educator known for his wit and lust for life.

Raised in Ojai by 'Bob' and Norma Andrews, Chuck was the oldest of his three siblings, Carol, Roger, and Pat. Chuck is a noted polio survivor; his victory over the disease at the age of 10 was captured in his father's book: 'No Time for Tears.' Chuck's childhood culminated with him as Senior Class President at Nordhoff High School. Chuck also followed in the footsteps of his father, a celebrated jazz pianist, as a fun-loving musician, even releasing an album with the Sodbusters where he sang, played the guitar and harmonica.

Graduating from Woodbury College with a BA in Journalism, Chuck embarked on a career as a journalist with the Oxnard Press Courier. Changing his career, Chuck obtained a Master's in Education from Stanford University and a Master's in Counseling and Guidance from California Lutheran University. Chuck's first teaching job was in 1964 as an English Teacher at Thousand Oaks High School though he continued his journalism career for 16 summers. In 1967 he married Susan ('Sooze') and the couple settled in Camarillo.

During his career he was recognized for his devotion to his students and involvement in activities such as coaching soccer, announcing basketball and football games, and volunteering at track meets. Chuck received awards for Ventura County Teacher of the Year, Ventura County Counselor of the Year, California Teacher of the Year, California Counselor of the Year, and was inducted into the Ventura County Educators' Hall of Fame in 2012. Chuck was named a Don of Camarillo in 2009.

Upon retirement from Westlake High School in 2000, Chuck spent his time as a Ventura County Master Gardener, served on the Board of the Camarillo Ranch Foundation, and was an active church member at St. Columba's Episcopal Church, where he served on the Vestry and as Senior Warden. Chuck and Susan spent half of each year traveling the United States and Europe, visiting Robbie in Alaska and Oregon, and Charlie and Pam on the Eastern Shore. In 2016 Chuck and Susan moved to Londonderry, a small retirement village in Easton, MD. There he created and tended what became known as "Mr. Chuck's Garden".

Chuck's annual Christmas letters wishing for a 'Cool Yule' leave a lasting tribute. Written between 1969 and 2021, they provided ample room for Chuck to lovingly tease his family and himself. They serve as a testament to a man who did not take himself or the world too seriously. Some highlights of his letters include:

"Recently, I was honored by my high school district for completing 30 years of service. I've been in the district so long that when I got here the Dead Sea wasn't even sick."

"Despite my longevity, I still don't get a lot of respect. When I told my doctor last summer that I have a bad back, he said, 'I can see that. And your front doesn't look too good either.'"

"When Sooze and I updated our will, I decided to leave my body to science. Then, somehow, a group of scientists found out, and now they're contesting the will in court. I can't figure that out."

"During my annual physical exam, I told my doctor that I treat myself like a finely tuned automobile. He said, "Well, that certainly explains the spare tire."

"So here we are, back home, in retirement. I have figured out that I am in the last of the four stages of life: 1. You believe in Santa Claus. 2. You don't believe in Santa Claus. 3. You are Santa Claus. 4. You look like Santa Claus."

"Without confiding in me, my body seems to have given itself up to the hands of time. For one thing, my memory's not as good as it used to be. For another thing, my memory's not as good as it used to be."

And with that note, the family whom Chuck loved, teased, and cherished, hope you get an understanding of what a wonderful man he was. A family service will be held at Christ Church, St. Michaels. Memorial donations may be made to St. Columba's Episcopal Church (1251 Las Posas Road, Camarillo, CA 93010) or Camarillo Ranch Foundation (201 Camarillo Ranch Road, Camarillo, CA 93012).

I loved this man. I loved his teaching, his mentorship, his attitude. He was just a cool dude. I tried looking him up some 20 years ago, but didn't ever find him. According to his obituary, he lived the life he wanted, which is not at all surprising. So many fond and weird memories with Chuck.

I played softball with Risa too. I remeber hanging with her one time at Westlake Elementary park and she had a short epilepsy seizure and educated me about what epilepsy was. I also remember her family having this cool shaggin wagon van, like the type in scooby doo : )

Man... Since elementary school. Maybe first grade, certainly third. Risa and I didn't remain close, but I did get to have a call with her back in the 2000s. I can't remember exactly when it was, but seems like it was almost 2010? I would love to see her again.

Obituary:
OFFICER MICHAEL F. CLARK

Born: August 12, 1966
End of Watch: August 4, 1995

On August 4, 1995, Officer Michael Clark responded with fellow Officers to a residence to check the welfare of a suicidal man. Shortly after arriving on scene, Officer Clark was fatally shot by the man. At the time of his passing, Officer Clark was 28 years old and had only been with the Department for four months.

Officer Clark’s untimely passing serves as a harrowing reminder of the daily risks our Officers take to help keep the citizens of Simi Valley safe. In order to memorialize the ultimate sacrifice that Officer Clark paid, the Simi Valley Police Department annually holds a solemn ceremony led by the Department’s Honor Guard at the station’s flagstaff.

On the thirteenth anniversary of Officer Clark’s death, the City of Simi Valley dedicated the street that leads into the police station’s main entrance by naming it “Officer Michael Clark Memorial Parkway.”

Gone but not forgotten . . .

Brennan didn't graduate with us. I can't remember where she was at graduation, but she was with us for most of our high school journey. I adored her in school. She was the sweetest, brightest, most enthusiastic and sincere...all the time! I had started to get to know her again on FaceBook in around 2017. I was completely surprised at her death. She is missed a great deal.

Greg and Jeff Laakso taught me to sail on Lake Sherwood when we were in 1st or 2nd grade. We used to race Lazers out there on Sherwood. We weren't close in high school, but had started talking quite a bit about boats and the Colorado river just before he died. We kept putting it off to actually get coffee and hang out... Which makes me really glad I will be able to see all of you at the reunion and reconnect. I miss Greg. https://www.legacy.com/us/obituaries/venturacountystar/name/gregory-fuller-obituary?id=11427957

Donna Giordan

Birth Date: 1966-08-01
Graduation year: 1984
Deceased Date: 2021-03-27
Obituary:
Donna Giordan Ontiveros - beloved mother, wife, sister, daughter and friend - passed away peacefully on March 27, 2021 after a courageous 12-year battle with Parkinson's Disease. She was 54.

Donna was born in the Bronx on August 1, 1966, the second of three daughters to Joan Giocondo Giordan and the late Eugene Giordan.

Donna was interested in the performing arts from a young age - singing, dancing, and tapping her way across nearly every stage in the Clifton, New Jersey suburb where she grew up. In 1978, she moved with her family to the Conejo Valley, where she would spend much of her life. She graduated in 1984 from Westlake High School and five years later from San Diego State University, becoming the first in her family to earn a college degree.

For the next two decades, Donna worked as an executive in the hospitality industry, serving in managerial roles at high-profile Los Angeles hotels like the Wilshire Grand and Hilton Universal.
In 2004, Donna met the love of her life, Andrew Ontiveros, whom she married in Moorpark just a few months later. Within two years, Donna's young family had doubled in size. Her first son, Evan, was born in 2005; her second, Aaron, in 2007.

Donna was diagnosed in 2009 with Parkinson's Disease, a rare neurological condition. Through a decade of doctors' appointments and treatments, Donna's passion for her children and zeal for life never dimmed.

Donna is survived by her husband Andrew, sons Evan (15) and Aaron
(13), mother Joan Giordan, and sisters Kathy (Jeffrey) Hillman and Gina (Ken) Painter.
Donna was active in The Michael J Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in her honor
Dara Gelbman Goldsmith - August 21st, 2024
Donna was one of my closest friends in junior high and high school. Her family treated me like an additional daughter always setting a place for me at their table. I had no sisters but Donna and her sisters were the ones I never had. So many memories! Sunday mornings at the Simi Swap Meet, sharing at the Skateen roller rink, her mom rushing me to the hospital when I dislocated my elbow. I could go on an on. We lost touch after college. I am saddened to learn of her battle with Parkinson’s. My heart breaks for her family. love you Donna like a sister.
Jim Hart - March 6th, 2024
Oh Donna. You were amongst my very favorites. You were always there for me ..and probably for everyone; just seemed to be your nature. I would so very much have loved to reminisce with you at a 40 year reunion. We will toast you and enjoy our memories of you and your great love.

Kathy Goeckler (Crane)

Birth Date: 1966-05-25
Graduation year: 1984
Deceased Date: 2024-04-12
Obituary:
Kathy Crane Goeckler passed away on Friday, April 12, 2024 after a courageous battle with cancer. She was a light in so many lives and her fellow classmates would no doubt remember her as someone who was always kind and free-spirited. Many, including myself, referred to her as a flower child, perhaps born to the wrong generation.

All of my best memories from high school included Kathy - eating lunch on the lawn at school on a sunny, Southern California day or even better, getting off campus (and not coming back) for lunch at Taco Bell or heading to Zuma. Foster’s Donuts before school and Numero Uno Pizza on the weekends were staples in our high school days, even before we could (legally) drive. Laws seemed somewhat malleable back then and we weren’t too afraid to break a few in the name of good food.

During our senior year at WHS, Kathy and I had first period shorthand together (yes, shorthand!). It was about half-way through class one morning when we realized we’d left some questionable paraphernalia on her bedroom dresser. It was like a scene from a movie when our eyes met across the classroom with sheer panic on both our faces. Her mother did in fact find it and seemed to buy the “it was our first time” excuse. If Mrs. Crane ever told my parents what we’d been up to, I never knew but the lack of a lecture from them tells me she kept our morning shenanigans to herself.

After high school, we drifted apart a bit but always remained in touch, keeping up to date on each other’s lives and would serve as attendants for one another at our weddings.

Kathy would eventually move to Redding, California where her sister and parents would settle as well. There she shared her life with her husband, Tim, his two adult children and their dog, Rhylie. She is pre-deceased by her brother, Steve, who died in a car accident during our senior year and her mother, Claire and is survived by her older siblings, Joe, Dan and Ann.

After a friendship that spanned more than 40 years we managed to always wish each other happy birthday and check in from time to time just to say hello and get life updates. Whenever we spoke it was like no time had passed, as seems to be the case with truly great friendships. I’ll miss hearing from her on my birthday this year and every year after but my heart is full knowing she’s in a better place enjoying a cold beer with her brother while their mom looks on disapprovingly.
Susan Reed - June 14th, 2024
Kathy moved into the neighborhood the end of summer before 3rd grade. Earlier that summer 2 sets of sisters were hit and killed by a car while walking to the country club which devastated our community. I lost my friend Pam but then Kathy magically appeared. Kathy and I became fast friends and we had a close friend community in Sunset Hills in TO. This closeness was special since the neighborhood was close to nothing except the country club. It seemed that every house had kids our age so we all hung out. Kathy was my childhood. Swimming, playing in the fields, softball, roller skating, walking home from the bus, shopping, BD parties. We were together always. We even got caught smoking at school in 7th grade and got suspended from school. (It seems so tame now!). We both moved away from Thousand Oaks after high school and we only saw each other every 10 years or so. FB and text was a good way to keep in touch. I’m so sad she is gone and I thank her so much for being such a great part of my childhood!

Kevin Kolarik

Graduation year: 1984
Deceased Date: 2006-04-02
Obituary:
Kevin James Kolarik passed away April 2, 2006.

If we are to judge a man's wealth by his ability to love, to spread joy and to show compassion, then Kevin was the richest man alive. He did not set out to change the world; he simply lived life the best way he knew how, and in doing so he shared his wealth with everyone he encountered.

Those of us blessed to have known Kevin will miss his gentle smile, the sound of his laughter, his razor-sharp sense of humor. Most of all, we will miss his love and compassion for others. He could ease your worries by making you see the lighter of the situation. He could turn your tears to laughter.

Our sadness is immeasurable. The void in our lives is profound. Life without Kevin seems unbearable. Maybe if we keep Kevin close in our hearts and smile like Kevin, love like Kevin, show compassion like Kevin we can keep his spirit alive.

Kevin leaves behind his father, John; stepmom, Liz; brothers, John, Scott and Bryan; sisters-in-law, Liz and Tiffany; nieces, Ashlynn and Jillian; nephews, Pat and Ryan; stepsister, Cheryl; soul mates and best friends, Deborah and Linda; and countless other close-as-family members and friends.

Kevin is a bright shining light. His brilliance will shine in our hearts forever.

Obituary:
Tracy Ann Loken Taylor passed away suddenly after a strenuous battle with breast cancer on May 31st, 2015. The making of this is for anyone who had the pleasure of being apart of Tracy's life and would like to help contribute to a beautiful ceremony that she deserves. My mother was the strongest most amazing woman that I have ever met, and not only was i so unbelievably lucky to be able to call her my Mother, but for my daughter "Ava" to be her only grandbaby. To Ava, she was her beloved "Gigi". There is nobody who could ever replace her and be the amazing women that she was. This feels like it is all happening so fast and it’s almost like we are still waiting to wake up from this awful nightmare. We ALL, including my Momma, thought that we were going to have much more time together, but as it turned out, one horrible afternoon her cancer took am extreme turn for the worst, and she ended up passing away a couple days later. This is just as much of a shock to my family as it is to everybody else that knew her.

Birth Date: 1966-04-18
Graduation year: 1984
Deceased Date: 2014-07-30
Obituary:
Eric John Selak passed away July 30, 2014 at his home in Thousand Oaks, CA from congenital heart failure. He was 48 years old.

Eric was born in Meridian, MS on April 18, 1966 where his father was stationed at the Meridian Naval Air Station. Within a year Eric moved with his parents to the Thousand Oaks area where he resided for the rest of his life. After graduating from Westlake High School, he began working as an apprentice in the tree trimming business and continued in the gardening and landscaping business for most of his professional life.

He loved exploring the beaches and the mountains and had a world-class beer can collection and an equally impressive arsenal of comic books. A collector of many things that interested him, he loved to restore them and often gave them to people who would appreciate them. Eric had an eclectic group of friends and was a considerate and compassionate person.

At his memorial at the Hillside Villas on Hillcrest Drive, neighbors and friends spoke about his kind and gentle demeanor. One friend claimed that when Eric learned she had no money for gas he asked for the keys to her car so he could fill the tank. Eric didn't have much money, but built a wealth of life long friends.

Eric struggled in his later years with multiple illnesses including diabetes, neuropathy, a bad back and knee and numbness in his extremities. Even with these painful conditions, Eric was still able to keep a happy face and cheerful smile. He would give you the very large XXXL shirt off his back; at 6' 5" he was a Gentle Giant, in more ways than one.

Eric's family would like to thank the Many Mansions Foundation (www.manymansions.org) for the support, comfort and healthy lifestyle Eric was able to gain under their sponsorship. A special thank you is gratefully extended to his long-time counselor Paul Corker of Simi Valley who helped Eric immensely to rebuild his life.

His father, Dan Selak, and stepmother, Joy Selak, of Austin, TX, brother Mark Selak of Santa Monica, CA, sister Terra Carr of Novato, CA, sister Sage Conran of London, sister Taryn Carlson of Los Angeles, CA and brother Ben Bernard of Lake Powell, AZ, survive him. His mother Sofia Tarila, also known as Barbara Sampson Selak, is deceased.

Donations can be given in Eric's name to Many Mansions, 1459 E. Thousand Oaks Blvd., Bldg. "D", Thousand Oaks, CA 91362, a 501c(3) organization.

Laurinda, you brightened the halls of Westlake High School for me. Your dry sarcasm was the source of so much contagious belly laughter. I remember my cheeks literally hurting we laughed so hard. I know your bright light will always live on in those who loved you. Me included. Miss you, my friend. xo

Lauri .... I miss you. I know we weren't the best of pals in school, but I am really glad we had some time to mend and catch up at the end. You were in great spirits and sounded really strong. I do wish you were here for our 40th.

I stayed in close touch with Scott up until his final days. I was also close with his now widow… I was the officiant at their wedding. Scott maintained his wit, energy and mischievousness throughout. An accomplished lawyer (yes, he saw the irony in that), a devoted husband, sportsman, and a great friend. May he best be remembered for his double-time, word-for-word rendition of the ‘cantina’ scene from Star Wars… it should still be up on Vimeo somewhere.

Man I loved this kid. He was so smart and clever and funny and just a really good time. I didn't see Scott after high school and I can't remember the story of his passing (If I knew it). I just know I would love to have met up with him again at a 40 year reunion and listened to all of the great things he accomplished.

Christine and I were swimmers. We both swam varsity as freshman. Christine was always one to encourage me to do my best. She was very inspirational. We reconnected at the 10 year reunion. She always found peace and power in the pool. I hope that continues for her throughout her life.
